The house was dark and heavy with sleep. Through the thin bedroom wall, Linnea could hear the low, steady rhythm of her father breathing. Downstairs, the refrigerator hummed a quiet, lonely tune. Linnea lay under her thick quilt, pulling the soft edge up to her chin. Her eyes refused to close. Being the only one awake made her feel completely separate from the rest of her family, like a solitary boat floating on a vast, dark ocean while everyone else rested safely on the shore.

She reached out and clicked the switch of her bedside lamp, casting a bright amber circle across her pillows. Throwing off her quilt, Linnea walked to her window. The glass felt cool against her nose. The dark pane acted exactly like a mirror, reflecting her own room back at her. To see outside, she had to cup her hands around her eyes and press them to the cool glass, blocking out the lamp's amber reflection so she could look past it into the deep indigo sky.

Linnea loved the stars. During the summer, her father had taught her to find their shapes in the dark. But tonight, the sky looked strangely empty. The stars seemed tired. Some fluttered dimly, like tiny, weak candles caught in a draft. Others were fading away completely, dissolving into the heavy black shadows.

"They are forgetting," Linnea whispered to the glass.
